I think most people are fascinated by lightning. It inspires both awe and fear. Here in the Mid-Atlantic states of the US we don't get the summer storms that I remember as a youth. I loved watching the fiery bolts traverse the sky and wait for the resounding thunder that followed--the louder the better. Thanks for a nice shot.

Whoa, this is the 2nd lightning wallpaper here on IFL, and this is quite a spectacular one. As soon as I saw it, I immediately went to the full-size version and gave it to Wallpaper Master's rotation. I love the color and the quality of it too! Thank you for submitting it, and I'm really glad IFL posted it.

This must be a dumb question, but I've always wondered how you take a picture if this, it can't be just quick reflexes... can it?

It was a special night with horizontal lightning under clouds, very strange and amazing to see.
To take this shoot, I use my D80,18-55 @18mm, F8, iso200 +1/3ev, bulb exposure. The photo start in the dark, and just after the lighting a finish it.
Software used was Corel Pain Shop Pro X to remove noise, dead pixel + dust artefact, contrast, color etc.

This is a fantastic image, keep up the good work.

This reminds me of spring. Its a good photo because of the color. its must be difficult capturing a photo of lightning bolts. Please explian how its done. Thanks!

How I did it :

- Wait a nice lightning night.
- Take your DLSR on a tripod.
- Use settings : low iso (such as 100 to 400), F8 to 14, bulb exposure, manual focus.
- Go out, carefully, with something (umbrella) to prevent rain from falling on the DSLR.
- Observe the sky, where lightnings are, target them.
- Make the focus, it should be near infinite.
- Engage bulb exposure, wait few seconds, and terminate juste after the lightning happend. If there is not any, terminate the bulb and do an other.
- Adjust +-ev correction, iso and everything else to have a exploitable photo.
